After a good nightâs sleep and a leisurely breakfast with Zeldyan and the women of Quaryn, Saryn retrieved the weighted wands from her gear and brought them to the courtyard directly behind the rear porch. Both Ilys and Abaya were waiting, dressed in exercise tunics and trousers and riding boots.
âWhy do you use the shorter blades?â asked Abaya.
âBecause theyâre more useful in a wider range of circumstances. Also, theyâre better suited as a weapon for women, especially on horse back.â
âBut the blades Father uses are much longerâ¦â Ilys didnât finish the sentence.
âI can throw my blades farther than his reach.â Saryn kept her voice even.
âI saw what you did at Cauyna,â said Zeldyan from the porch, where she sat with Anyna. âIf itâs not too⦠intrusive, might I ask how many men youâve killed by throwing a blade?â
Saryn glanced up at the regent. âIâve never kept track, but itâs well over a score, perhaps two or three times that.â
For just a moment, Anynaâs face froze, and Saryn could sense the shock.
âYou should understand that Westwind has been under attack in some way every year. Just this year, Iâve been in three battles or skirmishes. In every one, weâve been outnumbered. The only way you can survive those odds is to kill them without suffering many casualties.â
Zeldyan nodded. The surprise slowly faded from Anynaâs face, but not from within her.
âCanât you just drive them away?â asked Abaya.
âThat doesnât work. Theyâd just come back, and that means twice as much risk for us. They have thousands of armsmen. We only have hundreds of women⦠and their children.â
âDo you have children?â
âNo. The Marshal does, but I donât. Her daughter is about your age.â Saryn picked up one of the wands and handed it to the younger daughter. âWeâll start with one.â Then she stepped back. âTake your position.â
Abaya immediately took a stance.
âPut your feet a little closer together. They donât have to be quite so far apart with a shorter and less weighty bladeâ¦â
A glass or so later, Saryn stepped back. âI think thatâs enough for today.â
âOhâ¦â came from Abaya. âI was just getting better.â
âThank you,â said Ilys, smiling and inclining her head.
âThank you,â added the younger sister quickly before turning and looking up at her mother on the porch. âSheâs very good.â
âI know. I watched her. Now⦠go get cleaned up so that youâll look presentable for your father. I hope it wonât be that long before he arrives.â
âYes, Mother.â Abaya nodded, then looked to Saryn. âFather lets us exercise and ride and spar, but only if we look like ladies the rest of the time.â
Once Abaya and Ilys had left, Saryn said, âLord Maeldyn sounds unlike other lords with respect to his daughters.â
âMaeldyn is quite aware of both the proprieties and the realities.â Anyna laughed. âHeâs also cognizant that they tend to conflict. Thank you for taking the time with them.â
âHow could I not, when so few girls are given the chances that youâve given yours?â
âDo you train all the girls at Westwind?â asked Zeldyan.
